Paws for Wellness: Legalise Hemp for Pets
The Australian Hemp Council has launched the ‘Paws for Wellness’ campaign to raise funds for the legalisation of hemp seed for pets and companion animals in Australia.
If you weren’t already aware, hemp seed and hemp seed oil is legal for human consumption, but not for animals!?!?!
Dr Bronwyn Blake, Chair of the AHC Fodder Group, is leading an executive team with the most knowledge and skills in the Australian Hemp Industry to process an application to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to allow for the sale of hemp seed oil and by-products for animals.
The APVMA has declared hemp seed oil a veterinary chemical, which means they have cancelled an $8 million hemp market, just like that!!!
Dr Blake has prepared a document ‘Understanding the Regulatory Barriers to Hemp in Animal Feed’ to explain the current restrictions to Hemp as a pet food.
A number of stakeholders and businesses in the hemp industry have already been significantly and detrimentally impacted by this.

It’s been a dry start to the winter growing period in SA for normal cereal crops. This hasn’t affected hemp which is sown later on in November. But if the normal spring season is delayed this can push the hemp sowing time back which can cause problems for good yields. We’ll wait and see.
Something different – today I have been sowing hemp on a one hectare paddock on my small farm at Mundulla. This is a trial of 4 hemp varieties – three Australian and one Polish – to see how they grow when sown in winter (only just made it on time) and without irrigation. We don’t know when these varieties will flower, which is the whole purpose of the trial. As we know, most hemp varieties are sensitive to day length and will wait for the summer solstice before flowering. Hopefully this doesn’t happen and they all flower in about 40 days time and we can harvest in 110 days which will be around mid December. Here’s for good rainfall between now and then!
Apart from that we’ve been processing hemp seed into hemp foods like crazy and setting up our good hemp growers to sow more hemp later this year. They’re all keen to go again.

Lee-Anne Barnett is the business owner of Heaven-Lee Hemp and is an active advocate for all things hemp.
Tell me about Heaven-Lee Hemp and your interest and journey with hemp?
Heaven-Lee Hemp was conceived because I researched for a long time the best way to treat various skin conditions and one which I suffered from, being psoriasis through most of my teen to adult years and my granddaughter suffered from eczema. I also went on to gain a Diploma in Aromatherapy.
So, in December 2017, I registered and launched the business. In the beginning I only had an online store or you could find me at various markets or Expo’s around SA and Australia. I did blends of Hemp Seed Oil with certain essential oils for various skin issues. I only had a Hemp Body Butter made from natural Australian products and blended with Hemp Seed Oil, plus a Shampoo and Conditioner. Over time though, I have created more blends of moisturisers and lotions for men and women, plus shaving creams, lip balms and oil blends.
In 2022, I decided to open a Boutique Store in the gorgeous township of Willunga. I source and stock many Hemp products from other Australian Hemp Companies and stock everything from clothing to bedding and bags. Of course, some is from reputable overseas businesses as well.
It has been a great journey so far. I have loyal customers who have been with me from the very beginning and many new ones who, like myself, see the benefits of Hemp and its many uses.
I would say the only negative about Hemp is the misinformation that is commonly aired and that is the perception of the illegal drug side of things, but educating people on the difference between Hemp and Marijuana brings a positive spin on it and once they try it, they always come back. Also helping them to understand the huge range of uses and products that are derived from hemp.
I see myself continually contributing to the Hemp Industry through the education and application of my products and knowledge. I also see this to the general public as a positive step in the right direction.

Hemp Recipe – Raw Blueberry and Hemp Tarts
Ingredients
- 1 tbs almonds
- 1/4 cup hemp flour
- 3 medjool dates
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
FILLING
- 3/4 cup cashews drained soaked in water
- 1/3 cup hemp flour
- 3/4 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 medjool date pitted
TOPPINGS
- 2 tbs desiccated coconut
- 1 tbs raw cacao nibs
- 1 tbs hemp seeds
- 1 handful fresh blueberries
Method
- Grease 6 tart cases.
- Place all of the crust ingredients in a food processor and process until the mixture sticks together when pinched.
- Press the mixture into the base and sides of the greased tart cases. Place in the freezer for 20 minutes.
- Place the filling ingredients in a food processor or blend and process until smooth. Spoon the filling into the tart shells.
- Top with coconut, cacao nibs and blueberries. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
NOTES
Soak cashews for 2 hours prior to cooking.
